Tracy, San Joaquin County
Tracy was founded in 1878 where a new Central Pacific rail line met the older route over the Altamont Pass, and it was named for railroad official Lathrop J. Tracy. The pass lies just west of the city, its hills covered with wind turbines first installed in the 1980s. Thousands of residents cross it each morning on the way to jobs in the Bay Area.
